HEW YORK MAYOR'S SCHEME NEW YORK, August 27. The Mayor of New York (Mr Foreilo la Guardia) proposes to raise 12,000,OOOdol a year by running municipal lotteries. More than 1,000,000 people in New York are on the dole, and the civic expenses for July reached the record amount of 16,000,000d01. • A national conference on the' question of legalising lotteries has been called bv prominent New York citizens, who point to the Postmaster-Geneial s estimate that 2,000,000,000d0l is sent from the United States every year for tickets in the Irish sweepstakes.
