MONDAY, JULY 30. (Before Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M.) DRUNKENNESS. ■ A first offender was fined £l, in default twenty-four hours’ imprisonment, CHARGE AGAINST AMERICAN. Howard Lawson (31) was charged with the theft of a sheepskin coat a pair of ski-ing boots,, a vest, and other articles, of a total value of £5, the properly of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition. Mr C ; , L. Calvert appeared for the accused.' . Chief-detective Young said he understood that the accused was exercising his right to trial by jury. In view of -this he would have to ask for a further remand. . Lawson was remanded until Friday, ' GAVE HIMSELF UP. A man whose name was suppressed in the meantime was charged with stealing 14s 6d. Mr C. J. L. White, who represented the accused, asked for a remand for a fortnight. The police had been inquiring for hinij and counsel bad advised him to give himself up, which he did this morning. The case would be ■ defended. The police had no objection to the remand or to bail being allowed, and the accused was remanded until August 13 and released on his own recognisance of £25, WARRANT TO ISSUE. ' William James .Duller Downes, who did not 1 appear, was charged with disobedience'of a maintenance order arid arrears to June 22 amounting to £134 7s 9d. The „ Magistrate said it was quite hopeless to make an order for payment of the arrears. The maintenance officer (Mr J. Garbutt) agreed, but said that the man was “ court shy.” His Worship issued a warrant for defendant’s arrest, the case being adjourned until Friday. ' ' MAINTENANCE. ; Raymond Frank O'Brien was charged with disobedience of a maintenance order the arrears to March 19 being shown as £9 12s 6d.-—Mr J. C. W, Robertson appeared for the complainant, arid Mr O. G. Stevens for the defendant.—After hearing evidence ( tha Magistrate stood the case down until Friday to enable further information, to be obtained-'■concerning defendant’s earnings. , ’
