(From Our Balclutha Correspondent.) YOUNG MAN'S DEATH. A tragic accident took place about 9.30 a.m. on Friday,;when James Jeffery Stirling, aged twenty-one, was killed. He was felling trees on Lis .fatherls property at Greenfield in company with .a younger brother, when a. dead tree next to the one‘they were sawing crashed to the ground and struck the unfortunate young man ou the head. He was rendered unconscious, and although everything post sible ' was done • for him ho succumbed! within an hour from the injuries rei ceived. Deceased; who was a son of Mr and Mrs J. _R. Stirling, was ext treraely popular in the district. He took an active part in the social and sporting life of the district, and was secretary of the Clutlia Valley Football' Club. The calamity cast quite a gloom over the district, and much sympathy is felt for the parents and relatives; The funeral to the Balclutha Cemetery yesterday was very largely attended. : ■ FOOTBALL. j There is no change to report in the •position of the teams as a result of Saturday’s matches, the position still, being ■ very interesting, particularly in the senior grade. . Clutha had a good win over Star by 19 points to 3 points, after a game that was confined mostly to the forwards. The Star team more than, held their own in the second spell, the. Clutha Lacks being unable to get an opening. Crescent defeated Clinton by 8 points to 4 points, and Toko beat Owaka. by 18 points to 3 points. Next Saturday’s game between Crescent and Clutha should prove one of the t biggest attractions of the season, as a win to the former will give them the banner, while a win to Clutha puts them in a winning position. _ ' . The South Otago Union will start the third grade knock-out on Saturday, the draw being: Crescent v. High School A at Balclutha, and Toko v. High School B, at Milton. PRIMARY SCHOOLS’ FIELD DAY.; The annual field day for Rugby and basketball, conducted by the South Otago Primary Schools’ Sports -Association, was held at on Saturday. Nine teams, representing seven schools, look part in the Rugby and eleven teams, representing nine schools, participated in the basketball. Kaitangata School won the Rugby shield, while the basketball trophy went to Clinton School. On Friday .night the residents of Bavuego uucl Stohy Creek entertained Mr Peter Murray, sen., and Mr andMrs Peter Murray.' jun.; and family who are leaving Barnego for Oamarudistrict, at a farewell function. _ Mr Murrav, sen., was one of the original settlers on Barnego, when This estate was cut up over thirty years ago. Although he has not been actively engaged in fanning for some years,- he has been residing; with his;-son for some time. Mr Murray, jun., has occupied a- farm at Barnego for some years, and lor a time -had a farm at Stony Creek. Evidence of their popularity was seen in the large attendance. During the evening the guests were the recipients of tokens ot esteem; in the shape of travelling rugs, pocket wallets, dressing case and book* for the younger members of the family; : FARMERS’ UNION. Mr S. J. Blomfield, of Dunedin; on Saturday night attended the monthly meeting of the Clutha Farmers’ Union, at which there was an attendance of about forty, including members of the W.D.F.U., and several young men. He outlined the value of the union generally and made an appeal for the establishment of a Young Farmers* Club in the district, and as a result, there is every probability of a club being formed at Stirling and also at Warepa later on. Mr Blomfield also showed several moving pictures of 'a general interest. Ho was accorded a hearty vote of thanks, and at the conclusion of the meeting the ladies present provided a supper. , ;
