(Received July 30, at 10.30 a.m.) Sir James Parr and Professor Elder, of Otago University, editor of ‘ Marsden’s Papers,’ represented New Zealand at the unveiling of the monument to Samuel Marsden on the 170th anniversary of his birth in the picturesque village of Carsley, near Leeds. The monument stands near Marsden’s birthplace, on the site of the warehouse where the first consignment of Australian wool brought over by Marsden to Yorkshire for experimental purposes was stored. Sir James Parr also laid the foundation stone for a group of six Marsden memorial cottages for aged and indigent employees of the wool industry. Sir James Parr paid a tribute to Marsden’s life and work in Australia and New Zealand as a missionary and practical pioneer. His sieal, faith, and courage were responsible for the rapid conversion of the Maoris. The High Commissioner said that Marsden’s name was highly revered in New Zealand.
