HARD TO KILL

DETERMINED AMERICAN MURDERERS Three men were executed last night at Sing Sing Prison for the murder of a social derelict named Mike Malloy—- “ Durable " Mike Malloy, as he came to be known from his survival of five of their six attempts to . murder hjm (writes the New York correspondent of ‘ The Times ’ on June 8). They were an , undertaker, the proprietor of a “speak-easy” in the Bronx, and a fruit dealei, and they had murdered Malloy in the hope of getting the 1,500 dollars (£300) for which they had insured his life. There was a fourth man ,i the plot, a chemist temporarily working as a bartender in the “ speakeasy.” lie, too, was to have been executed last night, but he was reprieved for a fortnight until his mental condition could be determined. Malloy was a frequenter of the “speak-easy.” a cadger for drinks. .Not suspecting that any attempt would ie made to kill him, he fell readily into the plan for insuring his life when he was promised free drinks without limit. The plotters began by plying him with poisoned liquor. All it did was to make him a little drunker than usual. Then they gave him oysters poisoned with wood alcohol, and he seemed to thrive on them. Almost in despair they stupefied him with liquor and drove a taxicab backwards and forwards over his prostrate body. After a few weeks in hospital be was as lively as ever. They then gave him sardine sandwiches filled with chopped tin, and he was grateful. Turning for a time to another drunkard in whose pockets they put papers identifying him as Malloy, they ran a taxicab over him, too. But he also survived. They went back to Malloy. They made him drunk again arid drugged him. They stripped him bare to the waist, poured water over him, and loft him out-of-doors all night in winter to get pneumonia. In the morning he had not even so much as a cold. So then they hired a room, and, carrying him there when be was unconscious from drink, they held a tube from a gas jet in bis mouth until he was dead beyond question.
