Makura, from Sydney and Wellington via Rarotonga and Papeete, arrived at San Francisco on July 27. She is scheduled to leave there again ou August 1 for Papeete, Rarotonga, Wellington, and Sydney, and is due at Wellington on August 20. CARGO FROM NEW YORK, The Commonwealth and Dominion Lino motor ship Port Hobart was to leave New York to-day for Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, and Dunedin. WELLINGTON, July 29. , The Acting Director-General of the Post and Telegraph Department has received the following message, broadcast by Brisbane radio.—“ All ships are requested to keep a look-out for the missing launch Derwent, 41ft by 12ft. . The launch, which is painted white, with two masts 'and a glassed wheel-house, is reported to have been stolen from Brisbane on Friday.” AKAROA’S PORTS. The Union Company’s Gabriella, from Grafton and Newcastle, left Sydney last, Thursday for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Greymouth. She is clue at Dunedin about August 4. PORT FAIRY FROM LONDON. The C. and D. Line has received cabled advice that the motor ship Port Fairy, from London, reached Suva on July 25. She was to leave the island port on July 27 for Dnnedin, Lyttelton, and Oainaru to complete discharge, and is due at Dunedin oh August 2, HAURAKI FROM PACIFIC COAST. The. Union Company’s motor ship, Hauraki, from Los Angeles, with cargo from Vancouver, was due at Cook Islands on July 26. She should arrive at Auckland on August 3. , The vessel has cargo for discharge at Auckland, Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, Melbourne,- and Sydney. AORANGI LEAVES HONOLULU. The C.A. ’motor" liner" Aorangi, en route from Vancouver to New. Zealand, left Honolulu on July 25 for Suva and Auckland. Advice has been received that the British. steamer Parraeombe has Jett Liverpool,,Nova Scotia, with a cargo of newsprint for; New Zealand. She is scheduled to reach Auckland about August 23. TANKER SOLEN COMING, The, British tanker Solen left Balik Papan on July 23 dor New Zealand with motor spirit )‘or the Shell Company. SEA TRAINING. • Stating that there was no scope for the employment "ofa large body of trained,youths in the Australian coastal shipping or interstate trade, the Minister tor Local Government (Mr •Spooner) said that the Government does not consider the expenditure of £60,000 upon sea training justified. No Australian registered vessels are engaged in oversea trade, and oversea shippers do not engage their labour in Australia owing to more.favourable industrial conditions abroad. In the event of prospects arising for the establishment of an Australian merchant marine the matter would receive attention from the Federal rather than the State Government. ■ THE MATSON’S SUBSIDY. . In replv to a question asked in the House of" Commons recently regarding the extent to which the United States subsidises the steamship services to Australia and New Zealand, the Undersecretary to the Board of Trade (Dr E. L. Burgin) stated that, apart from assistance in the form of loans at low rates of interest for shipbuilding, it would appear that the Matson Navigation Company was in receipt of subsidies to the' extent of 1,250,000d0l from tbe United States Government.
