TRAFFIC CONTROL.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—A motorist has been fined for failing to stop at the signal of the constable on point duty at the Stock Exchange. The constables on point duty should give clear, distinct, and unmistakable signals. At present it is frequently impossible to interpret the constable’s signal. On one occasion I arrived at Jacobs’s • Corner simultaneously with an express van which was coming down High street. As I was at the intersection slightly before the carrier, and as the other vehicle was a slower horse-drawn one, I naturally expected to receive precedence. The constable gav a most indistinct signal, which I thought was meant' for me, and proceeded. Halfway across the intersection I was rudely stopped by the constable, who told me in no uncertain terms what he thought of me. It should also be possible, on arriving at this intersection, to receive the signal to proceed without having first to sound the horn to apprise the constable of your preserice. To one who

has had experience of traffic control- iu the northern centres, our inefficient and antiquated system is most irksome;. I ouce stood fascinated for half-an-houc watching the traffic policeman controlling the traffic at the corner - of Symonds street and Karangahape road, one of the busiest and most dangerous intersections in Auckland. The traffic seemed to proceed in an easy, endless flow. Signalling constantly, he kept the stream of traffic moving onwards with scarcely a perceptible halt._ Better traffic control in our streets is long overdue. This is a matter to which our City Fathers should, give their urgent attention.— l am, etc.. Auto. , July 30. :
