White) to-day informed the House of Representatives that Great _ Britain had been asked if she were willing to waive certain rights under the Ottawa agreement which would enable the Commonwealth to meet the Italian requests with a view to concluding a trade treaty with Italy. He stated that Italy liad been asking f or tariff concessions, but tbe Commonwealth was unable to. acquiesce without infringing the obligations to Britain. _ If meanwhile Itah’s. proposed restriction on Australian wool operated in the nature of discrimination against Australian products it would constitute a contravention of the Anglo Italian Treaty of 1883. The Commonwealth Government was watching the position very carefully.
