It unfolds a terrifically moving romance set amid thrill* under the sea, on the water, and in the air, in a vivid narrative of fighting in the Mediterranean off the coast of Italy. Stirring, and oftime breathtaking incidents revolve about a naval lieutenarit who, in an effort to save hia closest friend, almost brings about tho death of an entire submarine crew when, due to his flaunting of the commander’s orders, the submarine is forced to. the bottom of the sea with its engines disabled. He is dismissed from the navy. Meantime, he has won the love of his commander’s daughter, who is married to a hopelessly wounaed aviator. After a series of compelling dramatic incidents, the young lieutenant is brought to the realisation or what he owes to the husband ,of the girl he loves, and makes an end to the futile romance by .insulting the girl in a powerful scene in which he pretend* to be drunk. Having nothing further to live for, in the end he sacrifices hi* life in an heroic adventure hr which he blows up a fort by.ramming.it with a submarine loaded with ‘ dynamite. Probably no marine picture • ever made before is so permeated with hairraising episodes as is ‘ Hell Below.' These scenes include an air raid over an Italian town, which interrupts a festive carnival and sends the inhabitants running madly for shelter in cellars and hideaways; the dramatic moments in .which the- crew is doomed in the submarine that cannot rise and their sensational escape ; the_ battle between the submarine and four. destroyers, and* the final terrific climax in which the fort is blown up and, its masonry, bottles up. the harbour of enemy destroyers.
