CLEANER WINS PRINCIPAL RACE Though the Waimate District Hunt Club has now disposed of its pack and pays the South Canterbury . Hunt tor so ninny meets in the Waimat" district, the executive retains its totahsator permit, and held its annual race meeting on the Waimate course yesterday afternoon. The weather for the first half of the programme was bright and sunny, then became overcast, and a cold wind made the conditions unpleasant, but rain held off until the racing was almost finished. The course was inclined to be greasy after the sharpest frost experienced 'during _ the_ winter, but otherwise provided fair winter going. No fewer than five of the eleven starters in the Hunt Club Cup Steeplechase, fell, but none of their riders were hurt. , , „ Last year the “ win and., pfcce system of betting was used, and L 2,494 handled. Racing across the t°P Black Duke ran into second place to Night Parade, and Starshooter and Mount Boa were close up. Directly the straight was entered Black Duke took charge, and ran home an easy winner by three lengths from Sunmaid, who put in a wonderful run in the short straight and beat Night Parade by half, a length for / second money. First View was the first to break a good line, but was steadied before a furlong had been covered, and Arrowform then took up the running from Violenta. This pair led Disguise and First View round the far turn and across the top. Violenta joined Arrow form at the turn for home, and at the distance looked all over a winner but First View finished strongly, and ran home a good winner by two lengths from I Spy. who got up to beat Violenta by a neck. There was no change until entering the straight, where Sea Peter joined Colleen Chenault, the pair being a dozen lengths in front of Locust and the favourite. In a good set to down the running Sea Peter just headed Colleen Chenault over the last few strides to win by a neck. At the last fence Parasang fell and left Peterette to win by five lengths from Hostage, who beat Willow Glen by five lengths. Lammerlaw was the only other to finish. Weatherley and Colossian at once took charge and raced along the back, on even terms, a couple of lengths clear of Eupator. After rounding the far turn Doiran moved up into third place, but Colossian, on the rails, and Weath erley wore well clear of him as they turned into the straight, and there was little between the pair as they raced to tin post, Colossian only securing the verdict by a head.
