SCHOOL TENNIS COURTS.

TO THIS EDITOR. Sir,—l would like to draw your attention to the attitude of the members of the North-east Harbour School Committee in issuing a circular to residents of Macaudrew Bay. This circular deals with the tennis courts attached to or on the school grounds. It is an appeal for £SO to complete .wliat the committee terms an improvement to the school and district. These tennis courts are used by children at certain times of the day, and are also used by members of the tennis club of Macandrevv Bay at other stipulated times, which is no doubt a very fair arrangement. Will the chairman (Mr Milward) or secretary (Mr Scott) state whether, if the £SO is forthcoming, they will give the children a little extra time for play on these courts in the evenings, in the months of, say, November and December? Mr Milward, at the reading of the annual balancesheet of the North-east Harbour School Committee, stated emphatically that its funds were in a very bad way, and made known to the large attendance at the meeting that the incoming committee had a most difficult hurdle to face with the moneys in hand (if any) ; yet this appeal is addressed to the public of North-east Harbour, and distinctly states that a grant will be made from school funds; also the facilities available from unemployed labour have been provided for. Does Mr Milward mean to state that the unemployed of Macaudrew Bay will bo asked to work on this work at relief rates of pay? <lf this is correct—and I sincerely hope the contrary—in my opinion

there cannot be any credit attached to the members of the County Council who would sanction such a cruel scheme. There are in our midst working men who are quite competent to put the little matter of the tennis court in order. Why cause further unemployment? My advice to the chairman is that he should ask the tennis court members to dig deeper. The cost of asphalting for materia! only is stated at approximately £IOO. The clay courts are unsatisfactory; the upkeep is high. Is this upkeep as high as the cost of asphalt?—l am, etc., Stopper. , June 1.
