DARLING’S DASHING INNINGS

A CENTURY AGAINST OXFORD UNIVERSITY AUSTRALIA DISMISSED FOR 319 Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, May 19. Tile weather was fine and the wicket good when Australia, winning the toss, batted against Oxford University. Ponsford and Brown started nicely, both driving powerfully, until Townsend, coming on at 43, got Brown, who played over a ball whicTi kept low. * Bradman took time to settle down, but IJonsford scored freely. Four thousand wore present after lunch, the weather being cold and threatening. Bradman, who had never been quite comfortable, badly mistimed a ball, and was out leg-before. Despite the bowlers’ good length and keen fielding, Darling again began in great style, quickly hitting four boundaries. Dyson had another success at 181, Ponsford attempting to cut a ball and being easily caught in the slips. He batted for 145 minutes, and gave t an attractive display. He hit seven 4’s. Darling dashingly reached 50 in forty-five minutes, and a total of 200 was posted in 160 minutes. Darling completely overshadowed M'Cabe, who seemed to pull away from a fastish ball, which he played on. Bromley was never happy, and was clean bowled. Darling’s brilliantly audacious 100, his first in England, took only ninetyfive minutes, and included twenty 4’s. He was out in the same over. With Chipperfield and Oldfield to-, gether 300 was passed in 225 minutes. Tindall clean bowled Oldfield and Grimmett in the same over. Ebeling was out to a very poor shot. With the last man (FleetwoodSmith) in Chipperfield hit out, but in attempting to hit a 6 ho was easily caught at mid-on. - The innings, which was' the smallest of the tour, lasted 245 minutes. Oxford began at 5.30, when it was bitterly cold, with a slight rain. The third over shattered the wicket of the Cingalese De Sarm. Rain stopped play at 6.45. Details:— * AUSTRALIA. First Innings.
