DRAMA FESTIVAL

(From our Balclutha correspondent.) During the past three nights the combined Women’s Institutes of South Otago conducted a drama festival. Eleven teams from various centres of the district took part in presenting one-act plays, the items being judged by Madame Winnie Fraser, of Dunedin. The competitors showed great enthusiasm in travelling to Balclutha each night, the distance in some cases being close on thirty miles, and the weather was the worst yet experienced this season. Strong cold winds prevailed with periodical downfall of rain. Each night there was a fair attendance of the public, and the items were greatly enjoyed. Results:— Warepa (‘ The Old Lady Shows Her Medals’) 1, Benhar (‘Wanted —A Housekeeper’) 2, Tuapeka Mouth (‘The Conspiracy’) 3. Prizes were also awarded for the best individual performances as follows: Miss A. Ross (Mrs Dowcy in ‘ Old Lady Shows Her Medals ’), Mr Duncan Brown (Ragget in ‘Conspiracy ’). A prize to the best junior was also presented. Madame Fraser expressed her pleasure at the standard of the plays presented, and complimented the winners, Mrs J. A. Ayson (president Otago Federation) and Miss Bel} also spoke.
