COLLIERY EXPLOSION
DISASTER IN BELGIUM HEAVY LOSS OF LIFE FEARED Press Association—By Telegraph —Copyright BRUSSELS, May 16, It is feared that thirty-nine lives were lost in a fire following a fire-damp explosion in a colliery near Paturages. Three dead bodies and four injured men have been brought to the surface. Constant falls of rock are impeding the rescuers. FORTY-ONE KILLED BRUSSELS, May. 16. (Received May 17, at 11.55 a.m.) Of the forty-six miners working at Paturages at midnight 2,500 ft from the surface forty-one were killed Instantly and five were injured when gas flames reaching a temperature of l,soodcg centrigrade ignited the coal seam. The bodies recovered were unrecognisable except by their lamp numbers and identification discs. ICing Leopold visited the stricken town and comforted the bereaved relatives.
