INDUSTRIES WEEK
KEEN INTEREST IN DISPLAYS Keen interest is being shown' bv the public in the " Buy New Zealand-made Goods" displays in the 462 shop windows in Dunedin. Already the campaign has had beneficial results, as re-> tailers report that many purchasers are now inquiring the origin of the goods. Locally-produced goods are in demand, and surprise is being widely expressed that the dominion is able to produce articles of the quality now being displayed. The educational value of Industries Week-has been proved in the past, but at no time have citizens been more alive to the necessity for supporting local industries. Improved trading will mean increased employment in factories and increased general prosperity. Only by a permanent reduction of the unemployed ranks can taxpayers look forward to reductions in unemployment taxation, which is now affecting everybody's pocket. The retailers are proudly showing this week the craftsmanship of the New Zealand worker. Every phase of industry is fully exhibited, and much originality has been shown in the dressing'of -windows. No two windows are alike. Each and every one commands close inspection, and the final appraisal is spontaneous—that local manufactures are equal to the best produced anywhere. At nights all the windows are brilliantly illuminated. The City Council has decorated the streets. More attention has been paid to the Princes street illuminations, but at the northern end of the George street business areas displays are being made of a nature that entitles them to more colourful lighting on the streets. The gay attractiveness of the street lighting should, be extended, if possible, to that area.
