CONVERSION SCHEME
CHAMBER OF COMMERCE ALARMED LARGE INCREASE IN SPECIAL RATES FEARED [Per Uxited Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 14. An emphatic protest was made by the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce against the proposals which have been under consideration by the City Council for the consolidation of all special loans as part of the conversion scheme. The Chamber states that the council’s proposal for consolidation or amalgamation of all special loans and rates within the area of the city, with a view to conversion of the rates of interest to the statutory rate, is alarming in view of the possibility of this amalgamation resulting in a large increase in the amount of annual special rates payable by residents and business people in certain areas, notably the central area.
