FLOODING AT WAIRARAPA
FLOOD GATES COLLAPSE [Per United Press Association.] MASTERTON, May 13. Hopes that a Hood in the lower Wairarapa district bad been averted by the opening of the outlet of the lake to the sea on Friday were disappointed on Saturday when the llomlgates in a small bank cast of Lake Wairarapa at the northern end gave way under the pressure of the bankod-np water. Several farms are flooded. It is anticipated that the water will take several weeks to drain away, even if the level of the lakes continues to fall. Crops and milking sheds, as well as pastures, have been inundated. The damage will be more or less serious, though all stock may be taken to safety. It takes thirty-six hours for the opening of the outlet appreciably to affect the level of the upper lake.
