CHESS
The monthly meeting of the committee of the Otago Chess Club was held on Saturday evening, and was attended by Messrs D. Harris Hastings (president), J. Crow, J. J. Marlow, 0. Balk, •1. S. M. Lawson. A. M'Lean, E. F. Evans, G. D. Wright, W. Lang, A. •1. M'Dermott, and AA 7 . Herbert (lion, secretary). Mr L. D. Coombs wrote stating that he had been requested to organise a problem solving competition on the lines of the ‘ Good Companion ’ competitions, which were held some years ago, and desired to have the club’s co-operation and assistance. He was prepared himself to donate a guinea to the prize fund.—lt was decided to inform Mr Coombs that the committee approved of his proposal, and was willing to co-operate with him.—lt was derided to hold 'the competition, subject to Mr Coombs’s approval, in the club room on Tuesday, .June 12, and Mr 0. Balk volunteered to assist Mr Coombs in carrying out the necessary arrangements. The Match Committee reported that very satisfactory entries had been received for the 1934-35 tourneys, and a start had been made with them. ’l'he question of celebrating the club’s jubilee on June 9 was. discussed. Mr Bali, on behalf of the Special Committee, reported that the idea of hav"iug a chess tableau had been abandoned, but ho, together with Messrs MarUw and Gillies, had other proposals in view, and would soon be in a position to submit them to the committee. It was decided to give the Special Committee,’power to carry out. any programme which it might adopt with the assistance of the executive officers of the club.
