His Honour Mr Justice Kennedy re-* turned from Invercargill this morning. Mr A. J. Kearney, supervisor of the National Provident Fund, left Dunedin for Wellington this morning. Mr T. Pound, inspector in the Lands and Survey was a passenger for Wellington by the 11.35 train to-day. Mr L. J. Captain R. G. Briscoe, a member of the House of Commons, and a director of the firm of Messrs Briscoe and Co. Ltd., who has been on a visit to Dunedin, left for Invercargill by the evening express yesterday. \ Mr C. D. Morpeth, one of the original members, has been appointed chairman of the Wellington City Mortgagors’ Liabilities Adjustment ‘ Commission, and Mr E. W. A. Kellow has been appointed to the commission. The changes are consequent upon the resignation of Mr W. F. L. Ward, who has been appointed deputy-governor of the Reserve Bank. Mr Thomas Mbodie, who was for* merly a well-known member of the business community in Dunedin,' but Jigs lived in retirement" for a number of years, celebrated his ninety-eighth birthday on Tuesday last. The 1 New Zealand Methodist Times states that the Rev. A. A. Hensley* who will return from the Solomon Islands this year, will be available. for appointment to a New Zealand circuit at the next conference. . .

Dr Sylvia Chapman arrived in Dunedin this afternoon, and is the guest of Mrs J. A. Cook. Dr Chapman has been practising medicine in Wellington for some time, and is well-known in Y.W.G.A. circles as president of the Y.W.C.A. of New Zealand. The president and. Board of Directors of the local association will hold a reception during the coming week, when members of the association and presidents of other societies will have an opportunity of meeting her. Mr L. G. Algie, of the local staff of the Commercial Bank, has, been transferred to the Invercargill branch of the bank.

In a personal note yesterday the late Mrs Janet Anne Freeman was referred to as the first white childd of Dunedin settlements. This is incorrect.Mrs Freeman was the oldest surviving white child of the settlement.

At the Christchurch Competitions last night in- the tap or_ step dance (under thirteen years) Miss Gwenyth Watson (Dunedin) and Miss Nola Lawrence (Christchurch), with 88 points, were equal first. Advice has been received that Mr Allan T, M‘Naughton,\who three years ago resigned his position as a teacher in the Otago Boys’ High School and director of the local School of Religious Education in order to take a course in religious education at Yale University, United States, has becir selected for th® position of director of the Board of Religious Education for the Presbyterian. Church of Mr M-‘Naughton will not complete his studies at Yale until July. At the suggestion of the church in Australia he will then proceed to Great Britain to investigate religious youth work there before returning to Melbourne. Mr M‘Naughton is a son of Mr Allan M'Naughtpn.of Maitland street, and a nephew of the Rev. D. C. Herron, of Knox Chhrch. This is the third educationist that the Presbyterian Church of Australia 1 has claimed from New Zealand this year, the other two - being ,Mr Colin Gilray, of M'Glashan College, and Mr A. K.
