The signal was heardby an operator on the freighter Sirsa, in Bass Strait, . about 8 p.m. Simultaneously an-urgent request was received from a .powerful New Zealand ' station_ asking all Australian shipping immediately ■to; clear the air. for fifteen minutes, as that station had also heard the S.O.S. from sonmwhere on .the Tasman- Sea.
