NOTES ON THE RACING. ' [By St. Claik.] The Southland Bacing Club was favoured with one of the southern province’s best winter days for the opening of its Winter Meeting, and there was an excellent attendance, tho gate receipts being £2OO 8s 6d, an increase of £lO 5s on the takings for the corresponding day last year. The track w ? as holding and slow after the recent w T ct weather, and towards the end of the day inclined to cut up. It was particularly heavy along tho back. Great interest was taken in the running of tho Southland Steeplechase, which w'as won by the outsider Ecclefechau. Umtali fell at the sod wall, and his rider, J. Walker, sustained a broken thumb. West Dome and French Fleet also fell, but their riders escaped serious injury, and Quiuopal ran off. Lady Kate put up an attractive performance to beat a big field in the Trial Handicap, and though favourite returned a nice dividend to win. The only other success scored by a Wingatui-trained horse was Palmary’s win in the Southland Cup, in which the veteran Black Duke made play into the straight. Palmary’s finishing run was a very good one, and he w r as w'ell handled by the Riccarton horseman, A. Messervy. * * * * Only Lady Kate, by Paladin—Lady Skirl (£45 and £4OJ), Eastern Chief (£4l and £29), and Valiska (£39i and £285) were supported for the Trial Handicap. Bright Voyage and Ozanam were slow to go away, and directly the field settled down Black Shadow took charge, and was followed through the straight by Vacation, Hard Times, Bright Voyage, and Moreen Girl. At the seven furlong post Black Shadow was six lengths out in front of Vacation and Hard’ Times with Master Lee, Bright Voyage, and the favourite next. Racing along the back Mountain Jewel moved up, and at the far turn joined Vacation, who had closed up to within two lengths of Black Shadow. Two and a-half furlongs from home Mountain Jewel and Vacation joined Black Shadow, and directly the straight was entered the favourite was in charge. He ran homo a comfortable winner a length and a-half in front of Black Shadow, with Vacation half a length off third. Once round the far turn Mastss Anomaly took charge, and led Miss Redowa and All Humbug across the top, where Water Power was six lengths behind the leader.
