GLADIOLI IN POTS

Only those who have grown largeflowered gladioli in pots realise what a magnificent display they make, either grouped in the conservatory or used as dot plants among smaller things (writes “ Lorna,’ - m the ‘ Manawatu Daily Times ’)• Under, glass no external elements mar the colour pigments; quite safe from gales and cold snaps there is nothing to mar the perfect beauty of their blossoms. It is necessary to select varieties that are amendable to pot culture and among these are Baron Hulot (blue), America (pink), War (crimson), Yellow Hammer, White Giant, and Halley (salmon), which take as well to pots as daisies on a lawn. Plant one oorm fairly firmly in a Sin pot, using a, compost of loam three parts, leaf mould, lime rubble, well-rotted stable manure, and sand one part each. The pots may be left outdoors until the shoots are an inch long. On removal under glass see that the plants never lack for moisture, and the daily syringing of the foliage keeps green fly in check. Immediately the flower spike leaves its sheath commence to water weekly and alternately with diluted liquid manure and soot water. The latter stimulant is very helpful in preventing the interrupted spike. The corms may be planted at any odd time..
