FALSE ALARM AT SEA
S.O.S. IN NAUTICAL SONG VIVID EFFECTS DECEIVE SHIPPING [Per United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 12. All shipping in tho Tasman Sea was put on the alert on Thursday night through a S.O.S. signal benig heard by a freighter in the Bass Strait, and also by a powerful wireless station in New Zealand. All Australian shipping cleared the air for a quarter of an hour to let any further distress signals come through to the Now Zealand station. None came, for a new gramophone record containing a S.O.S. signal and sea effects had run itself out over tho air from Station 3YA, Christchurch. That is the secret of the S.O.S. call. The gramophone record which created the alarm was a now release. It will bo withheld from the air in future, it is a reproduction of Malcolm M'Eachern’s bass voice in tho song ‘ Rocked in tho Cradle of the Deep,’ and between the verses a S.O.S. signal ami storm effects arc introduced very realistically.
