YACHT TO SALVAGE SHIP. It is striking to notice how speed is being made one of the principal qualifications considered necessary by Abe most experienced .salvage firms, owing, no doubt, to the cost of protracted salvage operation and the price of tonnage when the job Is'-completed. Tho new salvage tugs built in Holland and elwhere, too, have a good speed, while the latest ship to be converted, the Salvador, was originally one of the fastest steam yachts in the United States._ Originally this vessel, which is destined for operations in the 'Mediterranean, was the famous Noma, built in 1902 by the Burlee Dry Dock Company, of Port Richmond, New York, for Mr William. B. Leeds, the famous millionaire. She was a twin-screw schooner of 873 tons, her triple-expansion engines water-tube boilers being capable of giving her a speed of over nineteen knots. During the war she was lent by a later owner, Mr Vincent Astor, to the United States navy on free loan, and armed with four 3in guns and two machine -guns she made a remarkably effective patrol vessel against submarines operating in European waters. After the war the vessel changed hands several times, until early, last year she was bought by Dutch buyers and resold almost immediately for Bremen owners for under £3,000 for intended passenger service in the Baltic. Instead, however, they had the vessel converted into a salvage steamer by Krupp’s Germania Yard at Kiel, and under the Italian flag she will how be worked in the Mediterranean by an associate of the famous German Towage and Salvage Company. It is reported that her speed is still in the neighbourhood of eighteen knots. WAITAKI’S ITINERARY. The Union Company’s new 2,260-tou steamer Waitaki, at present on her maiden voyage to New Zealand, is reported to have arrived at Safagi, in the Red Sea. where she is to load phosphates for Bluff and Wellington. She is to leave Safagi on Monday, and proceeds to South Australia, where she will load general cargo for the dominion. She is expected to reach South Australia during the first week in June, and will load at Adelaide and Edithburg for Bluff, Dunedin, Lyttelton, and Wellington.
