MANY ANNIVERSARIES
HISTORIC DATES IN CANADA Important dates in the not nnroinautic history of the Dominion of Canada and the group of colonies which precoded Confederation are being marked by adequate celebrations during the present year. ■lt is the foift- hundredth anniversary of the landing of .Jacques Cartier, who set foot on the Atlantic coast in July, 1534, and took possession of the country in the name of the King of France. In 1634 the city of Three Rivers, in Quebec, was founded l>3 r one Sieur do Laviolette. , One hundred and fifty years ago New Brunswick acquired its personality as a separate province. The territory‘'which now forms New Brunswick was part of Acadie under French rule, and from 1763 to 1784 was included in the colony of Nova Scotia. Also dating from 1784 are the settlements of United Empire Loyalists in what now arc the provinces of Quebec ami Ontario. These were inhabitants of the American colonies who remained loyal to Britain in the Revolution and wore expelled from their home land as a consequence.' • One hundred years ago, in 1834, tho city of Toronto was incorporated. Now it is the capital of Ontario, with a population of two-thircls of a million.
