GOVERNMENT AND ALVTEUN!TY HOSPITAL.
The of Health to-day explained the position in regard to the new .obstetrical hospital at Dunedin. He said it was proposed to replace the two obstetrical hospitals now functioning there, and amended financial proposals were at present receiving consideration. The Dunedin Savings Bank's offer had nothing to do with the Government. It was made to the Hospital Board. The attitude of the Government was made plain in November. When a deputation at Dunedin was informed that the Public Works Department had gone carefully into the (prestiou of reconditioning St. Helens, which could be done for an estimated cost of £8,150. The board’s proposal was to erect a new building, estimated to cost £23,570, which.
with the expenses of site and equipment, would make in round figures £30,000. It was proposed that the Government make a grant of £10,000; also the Government would have to subsidise the remaining £20,000 by £IO,OOO. The hoard had to choose between tins and the - St. Helens proposals.—Press Association.
