WHICH WAY SHOULD HORSESHOE HANG?

The old problem has broken outl again, and this time it is going to be argued by a civic body, says the ‘ Daily Mail.’ When the Gloucester Corporation next meets there promises to be a lively discussion on whether the gold horseshoes on the mayoral chain should have their points up or down. The question' is becoming a hardy annual with Gloucester. Only last your the corporation was persuaded by the then mayor, Mr W. L. Edwards, to have the horseshoes, which for years had linked the mayoral chain in the downward way, reversed so that the points were at the top. It was said in favour of the change that the traditional luck-bringing charms of the horseshoe would not then run out, and that the reversal had received public endorsement. For a year Mr Edwards wore the chain in the new style. Everything ran smoothly until he handed over the insignia of office to his successor, Mr T. Hannam-Clark, who is seeking the permission of the corporation to have the horseshoes changed back again. The Gloucester horseshoe camps are divided, and this is what the leaders of the two sides said, when the only thing they agreed upon was that they were not fighting on superstitious grounds. . Mr* Hannam-Clark said; “The only reason why I want tho horseshoes changed is that it is historically wrong for the points to face upwards. T do not agree that' the change has received public endorsement. Every comment that has reached me has been otherwise.” , Mr Edwards said: “I had the horseshoes- changed because the trend or public opinion was that they should nang with' the points facing upwards.
