There were amazing scenes on the Darjeeling racecourse after the outrage, when an unsuccessful attempt was made to murder the Governor (Sir John Anderson). European and Indian spectators formed a protective cordon 'around the Governor while guards and others grappled with the assailants. The Governor wi . not' perturbed, and requested that the racing should be continued. He remained till the end, and departed amid rousing cheers. He had a miraculous escape, several shots being fired at close range. The police later searched houses and arrested many youths. By a coincidence the Indian Government yesterday announced that the King’s Medal had been awarded to Mr M. Cleary, police superintendent at Chittagong, for bravery during the terrorist attack at a cricket match on January 11. Other awards were made to Major D. Brett and Captain Deedes.
