Investigations on the heating of ' cables under conditions of short circuit recently were made by Herr A. Hecht in Germany to throw light f ppon the possibility of outbreaks on board ships being caused through the deterioration of electrical installations, particularly when subjected to continuous vibration. The investigation took the form of determining the total temperature rise that takes place in the cables, and m order to arrive at accurate results the specific heat of each of the components forming the insulation was first meaTwelve experimental lengths of cable ranging from 0.054 to 0.232 square inch cross-section were investigated, and the tests showed that the proportion of heat in the insulation and in the copper depended upon the time factor. It is stated that it ranged from 8 to 38 per cent, in the' insulation, and from 85 to 50 per cent, for the copper. These results confirm practical experience and show the measure of importance that attaches to the continued overloading and consequent serious heating of cables, and should go some way toward the solution of apparently unaccountable fires.
