MANCHESTER UNITY

The fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Mosgiel Lodge was held on Tuesday evening, N.G. Bro. H. Wright presiding. The committee set up to make arrangements for the dance next lodge night reported that everything had been satisfactorily arranged. An invitation was received from the local Foresters’ Court to attend its lodge social. .It was resolved that a letter of "appreciation bo forwarded to P.G. Bro. 1C Sharp, of Hand and Heart Lodge, for his kindness in visiting Mosgiel brethren who were in hospital. Considerable attention was devoted to an appeal by Bro. H. Irving, secretary of the Taieri Juveuile Lodge, who asked that the adult brethren should attend the juvenile meetings and help in the juvenile movement. A membership campaign had been launched by the Juvenile Council, and good results were anticipated. Loyal Caversham Lodge held its fortnightly meeting in the Oddfellows’ Hall, Forbury Corner, N.G. Bro; J. Stevenson, sen., '■presiding. The meeting opened with a good muster of members. The order paper for the- Dispensary Board meeting was discussed. G.M. Bro. V. Dixon was deputed to represent the lodge at the official visit to Loyal Waikaka Lodge on May 12. It was decided to hold a ladies’ evening next lodge night, the evening to take the. form of a dance. One candidate was initiated. At 8.15 the lodge adjourned and members of the Unity Lodge, 1.0.0. F., were welcomed. The half-yearly card match between the two lodges was then played, the final result being: Caversham, 30 games; Unity, 27 games. The N.G. of the visiting lodge presented the shield to the winners, and conveyed the thanks of his lodge for a pleasant evening. The visitors were afterwards entertained at supper. ; The Loyal Princess Mary Lodge held its fortnightly meeting on Tuesday, May 1. Acting N.G. Sister Meiklejohn presiding over a good attendance of members and visiting brethren. Included in correspondence was an invitation from the Loyal Mosgiel Lodge for the sisters to attend a dance, to be held on May 13. Three candidates were initiated. After the business had been, disposed of, the lodge was adjourned to enable the officers to entertain the visitors. This took the form of a social evening, dancing and games being interspersed with various items, concluding with supper. A vote of thanks was passed to the officers for an enjoyable evening. The fortnightly meeting of Loyal Centenary Lodge was held in the Wesley Street Hall, Bro. Hubbard presiding over a fair gathering of members and visitors. A cordial welcome was extended to P.D.G.M. Bro. A. Cameron, who was making his first visit to the lodge in his official _ capacity. It being the nearest meeting night to Auzac Day, mourning was observed, and during the evening Permanent Secretary Bro. Bosevear, in an appropriate address, made reference to those brethren who had served in the Great War. and members stood in silence as a tribute to the memory of fallen brethren. The N.G. conveyed the thanks of the meeting to Bro. Rosevear For his address. The P.D.G.M., with the assistance of P.G. Bro. Hartstonge, later installed Bro. M'Allan as guardian. A small committee was set up to make arrangements for suitably celebrating the twenty-fourth anniversary of the lodge, which falls on July 9. It was decided to commence the first round of the annual card tournament next lodge night. One proposition for membership was received. The Loyal Tuapeka Lodge met at Lawrence, when there was a good attendance of officers and brethren, N.G. Bro. L. Gare presiding. The resignation of Bro. Jas. M'Kinlay from the office of V.G. was accepted with regret. The N.G. conveyed to Bro. M'Kinlay the thanks of the lodge for his services, and congratulated him on appointment to a position in Dunedin. A general discussion ensued on the South Otago initiation competition, which was held in the Anglican Hall, Lawrence. Six lodges competed, and all gave a creditable rendering of the ritual, the local lodge proving the winners. The competition was judged by the Competitions Committee. The shield was presented to the N.G. of Tuapeka Pioneer Lodge by the I VP.G.M. Visiting brethren included members of Dunedin and Kaitangata lodges, while P.P.G.M. Bro. C. Wood represented the Loyal Dalton (Balclutha) Lodge. Before commencing business at the fortnightly meeting of the Loyal Albion Lodge, sympathetic reference was made to the passing of an old and respected member, Bro. G. R. Davcy, who was for forty-eight years connected with the lodge. The meeting was well attended, N.G. Bro. S. Varcoe presiding. One proposition for membership was received. The lodge officers who gained second place in the recent annual initiation competition were congratulated on their good showing, and a vote of thanks was extended to P.P.G.M. Bro. E. Longworth for his services as coach. It being the night of the official visit from sister lodges, the N.G. extended a welcome to over 100 visiting brethren, including representatives of . the Loyal Outram and Mosgiel Lodges. P.D.G.M. Bro. A. Cameron represented the District Executive. Harmony was the order of the evening, Albion and visiting members contributing to an enjoyable programme. Supper was handed round, and the evening concluded with a short (lance to music provided by Bro. Joyce, Bro. S. Varcoe acting as M.C.
