OBITUARY

A NEW ZEALAND MISSIONARY A cablegram just received by the local secretary of the China inland Mission announces the death on the 2nd inst. of a veteran missionary, Miss Lilias Reid, who, with her sister,. Miss Hannah L. Reid, was stationed at Anking, in the province of Anwbei,China. The sisters, who were inseparable companions and fellow-workers.-hailed from Akaroa, but later removed to Christchurch, whence in 1895 together they joined the ranks of Dr J--Hudson Taylor’s Mission, about that time first brought into prominence in New Zealand by the late Rev. George Nicoll. They proceeded to China with, a party of which Miss Edith Searell (who later, in 1900, was killed by the Boxers in the memorable outbreak of that year) and Miss Bessie Webster,; of Gust, Canterbury (who is still in the mission’s employ in China), were members. From China to New Zealand the two sisters returned several times on furlough, and did acceptable deputation work in New Zealand. A 1 few years ago they were superannuated,; but, "being confident of their ability and call to yet further service for the women and girls of China, they _ obtained leave of the mission authorities to return to a sphere of service suitable to them. At their own charges they returned to China, and as late letters evidence, were both comfortably located at Anking, and very happy in the service of love to which they felt called and so gladly responded. The deceased lady was esteemed and loved by all who knew her, and in her demise both they and the China Inland Mission have sustained a severe loss. SIR ALEXANDER JARVIE HOOD SYDNEY, May 9.
