THE LIFEBOYS

[By Camp Fibe.]

The’ 11th Dunedin (South Dunedin Baptist) team had a good parade, when twenty-fivo boys and two leaders were present. The inspecting officer arrived at the commencement of the evening and remained throughout. The parade commenced with the flag raise, the singing of the National Anthem, and the repetition of the Life Boys’ code, followed by a hymn and short prayer, after which Mr Young addressed the boys on ‘ Truthfulness.’ A welcome was then extended to the inspecting officer, who was greeted by the singing of the Life Boys’ anthem. The inspecting officer thanked the teams for the reception given him, stating how pleased he was to see one of the largest teams in Dunedin in action. The rest of the evening was given over to games. During a spell between games the hoys were encouraged to ask the team riddles, and this innovation was received quite enthusiastically, some bringing along nearly a whole sheet from a newspaper so as to be sure of having a riddle which no one else had asked. Green Island team had a good parade last week. The team is sorry to lose one of its number, who is leaving shortly for the West Coast. The exceptionally bad weather was responsible for the rather poor attendance at St. Peter’s (Anglican) team’s parade on Friday evening last, when only nine boys were present. The leaders gave the boys plenty of games to keep them warm, and all were sorry when the time came for dismissal. Several new innovations are being worked into the parades. A big effort is being made to have all the boys in uniform. The writer came across a game which he considers would make quite a good “ spell ” between more active games some evening. It is really a variation of the old-fashioned game of “ hide the thimble," but in this instance the “ thimble ” is placed where it is perfectly visible, but in a spot where it is not likely to be noticed (this is done after the team has been sent out of the room, of course). The boys then enter tllte room again and look for it. When one of them sees it he should go and quietly sit down without indicating to the others where it is. To ensure that he really has been successful in locating the object he should be asked to point it out after a reasonable time has elapsed. The Ist Dunedin team had a good parade last week, twenty-one boys turning out. After an inspiring talk by Mrs Todd physical culture was conducted by Leader Reid, and it is evident the boys are really keen on this work.
