BURNSIDE STOCK SALES

LARGE PERCENTAGE CF CDWS YARDED There was rather a spiritless demand for the ordinary grades of fat cattle offered to-day at Burnside, and values were a little under the best prices ruling last week. Butchers’ ewes were slow to sell at the start of the fat sheep market, and wethers experienced an uneven sale. It was not expected that there would be any alteration in the trend of the sale as the later races were reached. Fat lambs remained firm at schedule rates. A fairly large yarding of 333 fat cattle was made up generally of indifferent quality. The penning' included a few trucks, of extra prime bullocks and heifers, the balance of these classes being of medium to light quality. Fully 80 per cent, of the yarding was comprised of cows, some of which were good, but the majority very ordinary. Competition for the better bullocks was quite good up to £l2 7s 6d, and extra prime heifers sold to £7 7s 6d. Prices for prime cattio were slightly easier than last week, although the market was in the buyers’ favour. Taken as a whole, it was a dull and erratic sale, values being about 10s below the best amounts obtained a week ago. Old and inferior sorts met with a dragging sale and were hard to quit. The following prices were recorded: New Zealand Loan and Mercantile Agency Company: Heavy bullocks, £8 12s 6d to £9 2s fid; medium, £7 2s 6d to £7 17s fid; light, £5 7s 6d to £6 12s fid; light cows, £2 17s 6d. The proportion of fat sheep entered was fairly large, ewes being well represented. Most of these, however, were of freezing weights and lighter sorts. Only a few pens of heavy wethers were in, the rest being suitable for the freezing buyers. At the opening of the sale competition was slow, there being a drop of from Is to 2s a head on butchers’ ewes. Wethers also met with an uneven sale, with prices in the buyers’ favour. Over 650 fat lambs were sent in. These sold well, meeting with keen competition at full schedule rates. There was no appreciable change in prices from last week. In the store cattle section there was a very large yarding of vcalcrs, includ-

ing several pens of exceptional quality from Central Otago. These sold at very cheap rates up to £2 17s. ine usual number of three and four-year-old bullocks was included in the cattle, entry. These sold at reduced rates, up to £6 10s being given for the tour-year-olds, and up to £5 for the three-year-olds. A small number of boner cows sold at very low rates. Bacon pigs realised from £2l os to to 12s, being equal to about s|d lb, and porkers sold from 30s to £2 ss, or equal to about 5d lb.
