WINTRY WEATHER CONTINUES
POSITION AT LITTLE RIVER IMPROVING WAHIHE'S ROUGH TRIP [Pkk United Press Association.] CHRISTCHURCH, May 9. The weather in Canterbury continues wintry, with more heavy rain. The Eosition has improved at Little River, owever, as the cut allowing Lake Forsyth to flow into the sea proved successful during the night, the level falling rapidly and bringing a great feeling of relief after five days of danger. The water is also off the roads in the district, but residents of the township have a heavy task scraping the silt off their houses because the water supply is still disconnected. A telegram from the Prime Minister states that the request for assistance in repairing the damage will be looked into. Exceptionally heavy seas were encountered by the interisland steamer Wahine on the passage from Wellington to Lyttelton last night, and the speed had to be reduced. The Wahine reached Lyttelton at 8.16, two hours late.
