MELBOURNE-BLUFF SERVICE

' COMMENCEMENT IN SEPTEMBER SUGGESTED [Pen Ukitco Fun Association.] INVERCARGILL. May 7. The shipping service between Melbourne and Bluff and its reinstatement in November were considered at a meeting to-day of representatives of the Southland Progress League, the Invercargill Chamber of Commerce, and the Bluff Harbour Board. It was decided by the meeting to send the following telegram to the Union Steam Ship Company and to despatch copies to the Prime Minister (Air Forbes) and the Postmaster-General (Air Hamilton) asking for their support:— “ A meeting of representatives of local authorities interested in the South Jsland-Alclbourne passenger service was held to-day, and, while it appreciated your announcement that the Mahono will be operating in the service, unanimous disappointment was expressed that arrangements were not being made for a reinstatement of the service at an earlier date, in view of the many important events taking place, including the opening of the celebrations, the Melbourne Cup, etc. The interested local authorities of Southland strongly urge the commencement of the service in September. They would also urge your favourable consideration of including Hobart as a port of call in the service, as apparently it is only a matter of applying to the Commonwealth Government for the service to operate for passenger traffic on this section of the run.”
