ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY
MONTHLY MEETING OF COUNCIL The council of the .Acclimatisation Society met last evening, there being present Messrs .1. H. Stewart (in the chair), C. A. Wilson, W. G. Reid, H. M'Dowcll Smith, H. G. Williams, A. ,1. White, T. Long, J. Hutchison, S. H. Barnes, M. Barra tt, G. Porter, S. If. Abur-n, A. B. Welch, AY. H. Wilson, and R. Fountain. GAME COMMITTEE. The Game Committee reported;— It is recommended that the society obtain regulations giving it jurisdiction over inland waters so as to prohibit the exclusive use of mimis. 'The Secretary of the New Zealand Acclimatisation Societies’ Association wrote saying that the whole matter of the opossum regulations would be referred to tbc Department of Internal Affairs in the near future. Other letters on the subject of the opossum .regulations were read. Air R. L. Potter (Pukcran) wrote asking that his property should be declared a sanctuary. It was decided that the society considered a creek an unsuitable place to be made a sanctuary. Thp report was adopted. PHEASANT COMMITTEE. The Pheasant Committee reported:— Air C. A. AVilson advised that he had been promised another cock and hen pheasant from Airs Hone Anderson, of Stirling, A report was received from Air W. H. Clamigbold stating that several young pheasants had died and that there were : now 23 old birds, 18 young birds, and three bantam hens left. The report was adopted. ANGLING COMMITTEE. The Angling Committee reported:— A letter was received from the Alarum Department (Wellington) asking for a list of all rangers under part 11. of the Fisheries Act at present under the jurisdiction of the society. ’The Upper Clntha Anglers’ Association wroting saying that it was desired to put out 600.000 brown trout fry this season and the same number of rainbow fry, and asked for assistance from the society. Air J. Cook (Roxburgh) wrote saying that quinnat salmon had not been seen ni the Molyneux River at Roxburgh this year. The report was adopted. BLACK SWANS. The North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society wrote advising that it bad curried out an experiment with black swans at Lake Ellesmere, green rings being placed on the legs of old birds and blue rings on young ones. It was desired that if any birds wearing these rings were shot in the Otago Society’s district the information should be conveyed to the writer.—Received.
