BROADCASTING.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir, —I notice a further letter in tonight’s paper ou the subject of the Concert Orchestra at 4YA. Apparently this octet has not met with the approval of a number of people in this city. That this should bo so is not a cause for worry, seeing that some jieople have a penchant for destructive criticism. For criticism to be of any value it should bo constructive, and further it must come from unbiased sources. “ Night Owl’s ” criticism in to-night’s paper was constructive, and therefore commands attention. 1 agree with him as to the ability of the players and conductor. These people are representative of the best professional talent in the city, and have had wide experience in orchestral playing. They represent the nucleus of the Dunedin" Symphony Orchestra, which, if musical critics count for anything, is probably the best in the dominion. Why then all this criticism with regard to "these players before the microphone? I would, suggest that the critics themselves are at fault. I have always enjoyed the performances. But then 1 realise that I am listening to an octet, not a full orchestra. No rational rqotorist expects a four cylinder car to put up an eight cylinder performance. I would suggest that the critics direct their energies towards inducing the Broadcasting Board to provide a full orchestra for 4YA, then they will do a real service to musiclovers here. —1 am, etc., . 'Chanson*. Mav 4.
