PRISONERS SENT TO CHRISTCHURCH SENTENCE FOR STEALING JUDGE'S PROPERTY On charges of breaking, entering, and theft at the residence of Mr Justice Kennedy, James Alexander Knox and Reginald Thomas Munro were committed to the Supreme Court at Christchurch by Mr H. W. Bundle, S.M., in the Police Court to-day. Chief-detective Young said that, as instructed by the court, be had conferred with the Superintendent of Police, who could not see his way to direct that an information of theft be substituted for the charges against Knox, Mr E. J. Anderson again made application that Munro should be jjealt with by the Children’s Court, The Magistrate: I do not propose to do that. Accused then pleaded guilty to the charges. “ To where do the police desire that the accused be remanded?” asked the magistrate. Mr Young said lie bad no instructions in the matter. “I cannot understand how the police have adopted this attitude,” said Mr 0. J. L, White, applying for bail for Knox. "It is wasting the taxpayers’ money to send these men to Christchurch, after your Worship’s strong intimation.” The Magistrate pointed out that if the accused were granted bail they would have to pay their own train fares to Christchurch. Bail was refused, and the accused were committed to the Supreme Court at Christchurch for sentence. Munro pleaded guilty to the theft of a rug and first-aid outfit, valued at £4 12s 6d, the property of Maurice Myers. The charge was held over sine die.
