WOOL IMPROVEMENT

CONFERENCE WITH MINISTERS [Special to the ‘ Star.’] WELLINGTON, May 2. The .woolgrowers’ representatives conferred at Parliament Building to-day oh the question of promoting a general scheme for wool improvement. The Prime Minister was interviewed by the gathering, which was attended by Mp Macmillan (Minister 'of Agriculture) •• No definite developments were available for publication. when the proceedings closed. This conference indicates that the Government is anxious to revive the proposal submitted to a Parliamentary Select Committee last session for research into wool problems. The Prime Minister, as head of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, placed a comprehensive statement before the House on the subject of wool improvement, and this was referred to the Agricultural and Pastoral Committee, which took evidence* reporting towards the end of the session that before any legislation was enacted to enforce any particular scheme of wool improvement a poll be taken of_ those interested in wooh mentioned by Mr Kyle, chairman of the committee, that the opinibns it had heard were very divergent. The Prime Minister’s view was that New Zealand must produce wool suitable to its customers’ requirements, and that he had been informed in Bradford that Kew Zealand wool had deteriorated to_ such an extent that it was not so suitable as formerly for Bradford manufacturers’ purposes. Mr Forbes added that he had informed the sheepowners that if they were unanimous in submitting a scheme the Government would legislate, and.>the committees report could be considered at a .subsequent session. 1 -
