COASTWISE MOVEMENTS. Poolta arrived from Wellington yesterday morning, and sailed last night for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Napier, and Gisborne. Port Wbangarei arrived from Wellington this morning. She is to sail this evening for Timarn, Lyttelton, Wellington, Tauranga, Auckland, and Port Wbangarei. Waimarino arrived about noon from Auckland via ports, and is to sail this afternoon for Bluff. She is due back on Saturday to load for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Auckland. Opihi is due from Wellington to-mor-row morning, and is to sail m the afternoon for Oamaru, Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Nelson, and New Plymouth. AVingatui is to leave Auckland tomorrow for Wellington, Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Bluff. She is duo on May 10. Kaimai is expected to clear Westport on Saturday for Wellington, Timaru, and Dunedin. She jis due on May 11, and after discharging a quantity of coal will sail the same day for Westport. ’ Gale is to load at Dunedin on May 8 for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, and Wanganui. Storni is due on Friday from Wellington and Wanganui. She is to sail the same day for Timaru, Lyttelton, Wellington, Picton, and Wanganui. INTERISLAND SERVICE. The interisland express steamer Rangatira reached Lyttelton from Wellington at 6.50 a.m. tp-day. Passengers and mail for the south connected with the express. REMUERA’S PASSENGERS. The following is an advance list of passengers coming to New Zealand by the New Zealand Shipping Company’s steamer Remuera, which is due at Auckland on May 12 from London: — Miss E. V. Mayo-Robson, Mr F. D. Bird, R.N., Mr B. K. Sicfert, Miss J. V. Alsop, Messrs A. J. and K. M. Roberts, Mrs R. M. M'Nair, Miss M. A. Dadley, Mrs P. L. Hogan and child, Mr H A. Parry, Mr A. E. Parsons, Mr and Mrs E. J. Trappitt and three children, Mr J. M'Shane, Miss B. O. Siefert, Mrs M. M, Kelsing and child. MOTOR SHIP ELMBANK. The motor ship Elmbank, which discharged a part cargo of phosphates at the Ravensbourne wharf, will unload the remainder of her freight at the Birch street wharf. She is expected to sail to-morrow for Nauru Island. TARANAKI FROM LONDON. Advice received by the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company states that the motor ship Taranaki arrived at Suva on Tuesday afternoon from London. She is to, sail this morning fpr this port, and should arrive off the Heads on Monday evening. The Taranaki is expected to berth at Dunedin on Tuesday morning. THE NARBADA. The Narbada, coming from Calcutta via Rangoon, Penang, Singapore, and Samarang, passed Goode Island at 9 p.m. last Saturday. She is due at Auckland about May 9. CITY OP BEDFORD SAILS. The City of Bedford left New York on Friday morning for New Zealand via Newport News. She is due at Auckland about May 30, at Wellington about June 3, and will thence proceed to complete discharge at Lyttelton, Dunedin, and Australian ports. PERSONAL. Mr T. H. Davis has rejoined the Waimarino after holidays, relieving Mr 0. T. .Robb for further instructions. Mr J. B. Williams has also rejoined the Waimarino, vice Mr L. R. Leader, who is awaiting instructions. Mr W. AV. Houghton has joined the Wainui as chief engineer, relieving Mr A. O. Inverarity for holidays. Mr J. J. Kettle has rejoined the AVaipiata as chief engineer after holiday leave. PHOSPHATES FROM JUAN DE NOVA. The British steamer Nolisement, which loaded phosphates at Juan de Nova (Mahe Group) last year for New Zealand ports, has again been chartered for the s.-jme class of cargo, and will load 8,400 tons for Bluff and Dunedin, July-August loading. MAKURA FOR OVERHAUL. The Royal Mail liner Makura, which arrived at AVelliugton from San Francisco on Monday morning, will not return to San Francisco until June, as she is being withdrawn for overhaul and survey. She will not be replaced bv another vessel, and this will mean that there will be a gap in the service until she leaves AA’ellington for San Francisco on June 12. The Makura continued her voyage to Sydney on Tuesday, and on May 10 she will leave Sydney for AA T eliington, where she will lay up. , The withdrawal of the Makura without a replacement in the service is an unusual proceeding. According to the Union Company’s announcement, it is being done owing to the prohibitive cost of providing a suitable substitute and the present state of the. passenger traffic. The company’s other steamer in the San Francisco service, the Maunganui, will undergo overhaul and survey in AArellington in June, but her running will be taken up by the Makura, which will then have completed her overhaul. The Maunganui will resume running from Wellington on July 10. The Makura’s absence will cause a break of twenty-four days in the transpacific mail service. Taking mall for Canada, America, and Europe, the Royal Mail liner Aorangi will leave Auckland for Vancouver to-morrow, and the Matson liner Monterey will sail for Los Angeles on Saturday. After the Monterey there will not be another outward transpacific mail until the Royal Mail liner Niagara leaves Auckland for Vancouver on May 29. Thereafter the service will be normal. GREEK SHIP TO BE BLOWN UP. More than 400 tons of gelignite will he used to blow up the wreck of the Greek steamer Archon, which was sunn

in collision off Ramsgate last September, and which is now a danger to navigation. The Tyne tug Trover, which will carry out the work, recently rescued the crew of the salvage vessel Dispenser .when the latter was on its way to carry out the work upon which the tug is now to be engaged, and which is expected to last probably four months. LIFEBOAT FUND CEASES. After an existence of forty-seven years the St. Amies lifeboat disaster fund has been taken over by the Royal National Lifeboat Institution, to which the remainder of the fund, amounting to £5,400, has been officially handed. The fund was raised following the disaster of the Southport and St. Annes lifeboats in attempting the rescue of the German barque Mexico, which was wrecked during a gale in December, 1886. Two lifeboats were capsized, and the whole of the St. Annes crew and most of the Southport crew were drowned, while the men of the Mexico were rescued by the Lytham boat. On the sum of £30,000 raised and invested £12,600 has been received in interest in forty-seven years, and nearly _ £17,000 has been paid out to the wives and children of the St. Annes crew during that period. HERTFORD DUE. The New Zealand Shipping Company advises that the Hertford is expected to arrive at Port Chalmers from Lyttelton about 5 p.m. to-day. After loading a quantity of produce she is to sail on May 10 for London and West Coast ports of the United Kingdom via Cape Horn. TARANAKI ON TUESDAY. Messrs Murray, Roberts Ltd. advise that the Taranaki was to leave Suva to-day, and is due at Dunedin next Thursday morning. ' She should berth about noon, and is scheduled to sail on Thursday for Lyttelton and Timaru. After completing discharge of her .inward cargo she will proceed to Oamaru, Bluff, Gisborne, and AVellington for loading. The vessel is to clear AVellington on June 2 for the United King dom.
