ST. ANDREW’S SOCIETY

A short but most interesting address by Mr D. Tannook on impressions gained during » month’s motoring tour of. Scotland formed the major portion of .the programme at the monthly meeting of; the St. Andrew’s Society, held in the Wilson Hall last 'night. There was a large attendance of members, and the..speaker’s .remarks were listened to with much interest. Mr Tannook , prefaocd_ his address by remarking that it was wise when travelling in that country to cultivate a Scotch accent. If this were done the tourist would escape being overcharged in many instances. The cheapest hotel accommodation in Britain was to bo found at Jedburgh, where .the tourist traffic was well catered for, and this also applied to the whole of Scotland. He had not noticed much to impress him as far as the depression was concerned. The people were prosperous looking, and the many different places, of amusement were, very well patronised. He had noticed how well the national game of golf was catered for, and there were excellent courses all over the country. _ The waste spaces on the links were utilised for pitching and putting greens, and he intended introducing these facilities to the Dunedin courses. Mr Tannock then went on to speak in general terms of the agricultural and horiticultural districts of Scotland. At the conclusion of his address he was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The following musical programme, which was followed by a social and dance, was given:—Scottish humour, Miss Stevens; songs, ‘jThe Boss o’ the Hoose ’ and ‘ Bonnie Woods o’ Craigie- * ’; Highland music, Piper G. Yardley*
