SOCIAL AND PERSONAL

The Auckland Club held its second social of the season in the hall of the Returned Soldiers’ Club on Saturday evening last, the hall being decorated for the, occasion in the colour of the northern city (blue and white). The vice-president anil his wife (Mr and Mrs E. Griffin) were the host and hostess, and after welcoming the members and their guests Mr Griffin expressed regret on behalf of the club members at the early departure of the president, Mr T. J. Kirk-Burnuand, to his home city, Auckland, 'and extended on behalf of the club every good wish to the president in his new appointment, and said he hoped that the president would be able to find time to visit Dunedin again before his term of president of the club expired. In response the president thanked the vice-president for the manner in which he had co-operated with him in forming the Auckland Club, and also for his flowery speech, and it was his, the president’s, hope that the club would become eventually one of the brightest spots in Dunedin, if not the

brightest. He had himself been here about seven years, and had grown quite accustomed to the “ skirl ’’ of the bagpipes, and the friends and associations in Dunedin would always remain as very happy memories, and if possible he would try and return before the end of the year, as he had to make arrangements for his family to meet him in his old homo town. As the president left the hall the band struck up “ For he’s a jolly good fellow,” to which all joined in singing, and gave him an appropriate send-off- to three resounding cheers. The vice-patron (Rev. E. T. Cox. Mayor of Dunedin) then spoke for a few minutes, welcoming the new members and guests, and said that ho recognised in the liall faces that ho knew twenty years ago' in Auckland, and said that the club deserved the full support of all Aucklanders resident in Dunedin, and, that the club had been formed for their benefit, and, like the Dunedin Club in (Auckland, everyone should throw in their lot to make the club an outstanding success, and not be bashful in making themselves known to each other, young and old alike. Musical items were rendered by Miss L. De Clifford and Mr A, F. H. Jeavons, and were very much appreciated by everyone. The Misses E. Todd and L. Bain (pupils of Miss Lily Stevens) presented a tap dance, which was artistically done and fully appreciated.
