A SURPLUS OF £30,127 REDUCTION OF RATES—RESTORATION OF WAGES CUTS [Pee United Press Absociatiok.l ' WELLINGTON, May 2. The Wellington City Counts! discussed the estimates for the year until 1 o’clock this morning. The mayor (Air Hislop) stated that the surplus of. £30,127 was greater than'had been-ex-pected. It was proposed to apply £lO,000 towards the reduction of rates. This -would amount to approximately 3 per cent, reduction. £6,000 would be applied toward the restoration of wages cuts. The restoration as from July 1 next of half the first cut.in wages and salaries would give employees increased hope and a little more confidence, and in some small degree it would increase their spending power. Mr P. M. Butler moved an amendment that as from the beginning of the financial year the restoration of the 10 per cent, cut be made in all salaries up to and including £250 a year, but the amendment was lost by 8 votes to 7. The estimates and recommendation# were adopted.
