CUSTOMS COLLECTOR RETIRES

FAREWELL TO MR B. ANDERSON At the Custom House in Dunedin yesterday afternoon ‘there was a meeting of the staff and business men to officially say farewell to Mr Bruce Anderson, who has retired on superannuation from the position of Collector of Customs after forty years’ service. The local staff attended in full strength, and there was a representative assemblage of Customs agents and importers and exporters, Mr G. F. M'Kellar, sub-collector, presided. On behalf of the agents, Mr J. Kirkwood presented Mr Anderson with an easy chair as a token of respect and appreciation of his ability and '.courtesy. Messrs H. C. Campbell, J. Phillips, L..'Rountree, and ■). W, Jowsey endorsed- Mr Kirkwood’s remarks, expressing the opinion that Mr Anderson’s services in Dunedin would leave no regrets on his part nor on the part of the business men with whom be had had dealings, and convoying the sincere wish that.he would enjoy his wellearned leisure. Acting for the staff, Mr M'Kellar handed to Mr Anderson a chiming clock, also a silver hot-water jug for his wife. Other members of the staff added their thankfulness to Air Anderson for his consideration to his . subordinates and their faith in his control as an experienced and capable collector. | Mr Anderson’s reply made reference to the happy relations of the whole _ staff, and voiced his pleasure in believing that the official severance would not break the personal friendship of which there was abundant evidence. Mr Anderson joined the Public Service in the machinery branch of the Marino Department in 1894. He was transferred to the Customs Department at Nelson in 1897, Ho-came to Dunedin in 1899, and two years later was shifted to Invercargill as examining officer. In 1914 he was transferred to Auckland as first clerk. His next change was in 1918, when he moved to Christchurch as inspector. In January of 1923: he was transferred to Dunedin as travelling inspector. In February of the same year he became subcollector, and in July of 1928 was promoted to tbo rank of collector. Mr .M'Kellar will he the acting collector at Dunedin until a new collector is appointed.
