FERTILISERS FOR CARNATIONS
Carnation growers are aware that the manuring of carnations is still somewhat of a vexed question, and the manure for them suitable under all conditions is still to be discovered. Any information obtainable in regard to this matter is always welcome. Experiments carried out on a fairly large scale in the United .States have shown that fine bone meal is an excellent furtiliser for this plant. Tried in competition with other fertilisers, bone meal is reported .to have produced the best results. Its action was much slower than that of niiraic of soda or other nitrogenous manures, but the vigour of the plants and the keeping qualities of the flower were markedly superior to the plots treated with other manures. Fowl manure proved to be a, valuable manure When used in small quantities, hut when used in excess it had a tendency to force the plants quickly into a weak’ growth} and greatly impaired the keeping qualities of the flowers.
