Thirty “ Red ” newspapers throughout the country have been suspended, ami many secret meetings have been raided. Tho Government has ordered the dissolution of the extremist National Confederation of Labour, which claims 1,000,000 members. Three hundred Communists have been arrested in various cities. Many minor clashes are reported. Fifteen thousand metal workers in Madrid have struck. Spain faces civil war as the result of the dissolution of tho Confederation of Labour ami tho closing of the headquarters of the Socialist Youth. The Government has ordered the prosecution of associations which are planning a revolution. Panic-stricken householders arc laying in provisions and bottling drinking water. In Orense attemps were made to disorganise the electric light service, and agitators killed two police and a bystander with bombs. CLASHES PROBABLE THIS WEEK Press Association—By Telegraph—Copyright. MADRID, March 11. (Received March 12, at 8.50 a.m.) The Left Wing newspaper ‘La Tierra ’ declares that Monday and Tuesday will bo critical and probably decisive days, because Fascist and Socialist demonstrations arc likely to clash. In addition there is unrest, especially in Valencia and Barcelona, which are arming against anarchists and gangsters. The shops aro specialising in safeguards and alarms. The banks have installed armoured counters enabling their employees to return fire, while windows and doors can be simultaneously closed by pressing a button. The middle classes have petitioned the Government,, declaring that they are unable to endure longer the present conditions. GENERAL STRIKE DECLARED BARCELONA, March 11. (Received March 12, at 12.20 p.m.) A general strike throughout Spain is announced for midnight. The Government has declared it illegal and is taking special precautions to maintain the gas, water, light, and transport services. , , _, • MADRID, March 11. The Catholic newspaper ‘ Acciou Popular ’ has instructed the Young Civil Defence'Volunteers to protect the sale of newspapers on March 13, when street fighting is anticipated. Tho Government has arrested the entire executive of the master builders, thereby complicating the situation in tho builders’ strike.
