SATURDAY’S YACHTING

CUTHBERT CUP TO IRIS The annual race for the Cuthbert Cup was conducted by the Ravensbourne Boating Club on Saturday afternoon in a light northerly breeze. Eight set off. After passing the Fertiliser wharf Tucana began to open out a lead from Irex, though she found this boat hard to shake off as Irex was running par-, ticulai-ly well over the strong ebb tide. The rounding positions at the three-legs were: Tucana, Irex, Eileen, Winifred,; Iris, Rascal, Geascut, Taroa, Result.i Shortly after rounding the mark Result struck a bank and retired from the race.: On the long beat down to Challis’s buoy, Tucana opened out a long lead, though the back-markers—lris, "Rascal.; and Taroa—were more fortunate in that the wind shifted a point, enabling them to fetch the buoy from a long way further back than the leading boats, Tucana, Irex, Eileen, and Winifred.-The-rounding position at the three legs for the second time was": Tucana, Irex. Eileen, Winifred.../Iris, Rascal, and Taroa. These positions were maintained, to the finish. It was at'this particular stage of the race that Iris was fortunat* in picking up a good westerly breeze, which enabled her to head straight down the channel, thus picking up a lot of time on the leading boats, which, were still finishing in a light northerly breeze. The placings on corrected times were as follows: , ■■. • Iris' (34min), IK 24min 36sec ; 1 Tucana (scr), lb 31min Ssec ... ...’ 2 Eileen (30inm 30sec) , lh 33min 13sec 3 Also started: Taroa (33.30), Irex (11.30) Winifred (12min), Rascal (28.30) Result (14min). INTERESTING RACING BY MODELS " The weekly races of the Vaushall Model Yacht Club, sailed on Saturday afternoon, attracted new boats iiito both the first and second classes. _ Tber® was no sign of a breeze at the time appointed for starting, but after a short delay the wind came away from the E.N.E. The wind though light enabled the models to cover the course in very good time. Great interest was taken in the races, as was shown by the number of spectators on the starting line. The course ' was from the Otago Rowing Club’s shed to Waverley. That the popularity of model yachting is steadily increasing is shown in the models coming to tho starting line every Saturday, and the club can confidently look forward to an improvement on the present record next season. The results of the racing were as follows; First Class (3ft Gin).—Siloam 1, Sea Mist 2, Yvonne 3. Second Class (2ft Gin). —Sally 1,Denise .2, Elenor 3.
