BIG SPORTS FESTIVAL

CALEDONIAN SOCIETY'S FIXTURE GHWAMBLE WITH GALAS »F YESTERYEAR “Where are you going on New Year’s Day?” “ Out to the Gale., out to the Gale.” More than thirty years ago the above words were sung by the young people of the day to the tun© of a Scottish air when the time was drawing nigh for the big annual sports day at the Caledonian Ground. With the advance of the years and the introduction of numerous counter-attractions the New Year sports gala lapsed, and it was not until recent years that, the meeting was again includedl in “ the ” events of the year, although it now has no set date. It was quite like old times at the Gale, on Saturday, when the latest festival of the Caledonian Society was held. , Of course, there was .the absence of huge money prizes for the runners and bookmakers to lay odds on the various competitors, hut according to persons well qualified to make the comparison the ground presented a similar animated appearance to the sports days of bygone times. , . , Thousands of- people occupied , the grandstand and the-terrace in front of jt to witness one of the most ambitious and varied programmes staged for many a long day. From early in the afternoon until after 5 o’clock' the ground was a hive of activity. There were one hundred and one different things to watch, and there was not a single moment throughout the afternoon when there was not something happening. The day was dull and rather threatening, but only light rain began to ’fall at the conclusion of the afternoon programme. However, there was still another big list of events for competition , in the evening, and the rain probably ; had much to do with the paucity of the attendance for that session. NCvertheless, undaunted by the small crowd, the performers gave of their best, and everything went off in excellent fashion. ■ Practically 'all the 'interest in the afternoon programme . attached to the competition provided by nine, teams representing eight business firms, including one from Milton, This new departure proved a pronounced success, being thoroughly enjoyed by everybody present, as well as the seventy-two competitors. The H.B. team won the coveted trophy, with,, the,; Bruce sentatives, only 1 point behind, as runners-up. Nothing of particular note occurred in the athletic or cycling events, although they, were all keenly contested, especially those for secondary schoolboys. A trophy for the competitor in tin field, events gaining most points was won by R. J. Henderson, who showed decided superiority oyqr the other contestants. ■ The usual i good entries were attracted by the Highland dancing, . which held the attention of a large section of the crowd. The platform occupied a prominent position,,on the terrace side of the harrier, in full view of , everybody! Three bright wrestling contests were staged during the afternoon on a mat out on the'green, which, too, could be seen by aIL Folk dancing by 200 Girl Guides delighted the spectators, and a clever gymnastic display by a Y.M.C.A. squad (under Mr C. W. Postgate) was accorded'much applause. Five professional races and an amateur event comprised the competitive programme in the evening, when the entertainment presented warranted much better public support. An exhibition of Highland piping and dancing was staged, in addition to extremely popular pois, hakas, and dances by the Huimai Maori concert party. The weather conditions were cool and uninviting, but they did r-t prevent many of those present from dancing on the green at the conclusion of the set programme. Old-time and new dances were held, and they were much enjoyed by their participants. Music was supplied in ample measure, as four bands were present during the festival, and whilst they were not playing the sound amplifying system for broadcasting the results was utilised by the presentation of gramophone records. Highland music was played by the Dunedin and John M'Glashan College Bands during the afternoon, when the St. Joseph’s Orphanage Brass Band was also present. In the evening the Dunedin Pipe Band and the Otago Regimental Band provided the musical programme, the latter for the dancing on the green. . Two handsome trophies, representing figures in sport mounted on marble, were contested for the first time. Presented by an anonymous donor, the trophies are known as the Tony Trophies, and the conditions governing them state that they will become the property of the person or team winning the competitions _ for which they are presented twice in succession or three times at intervals.
