MOTOR CYCLE RACES

MEETING AT WAIKDUAITI O.M.C. The programme was confined to motor cycle races, and in each, class satisfactory entries were received. After a very high tide in the morning, the water receded sufficiently to allow the first event to start on time, and from then on the programme was put through with a minim inn of delay. t An body of officials attended to the various details necessary to the smooth working of the programme. The keen north-east wind gave little trouble to the riders. Results: — FOUR-MILE HANDICAP. R. A. Loraine (A.J.S.), 44sec ... 1 G. P. Douglas (Ariel), 20sec 2 R. Clementson (Indian “Blney”), 16sec 3 Time, 4min 16scc. The event was open . only to members of the club, who had never won a beach race. On rounding the starting point for the first time, Anderson had a substantial lead, with Munro, Gutzewitz, and Clementson following in that order, hut Anderson had engine trouble. At the end of the fourth mile Gutzewitz had overtaken Munro, who was followed by Hayes, then Clementson. When half the distance had been covered Gutzewitz had increased his lead, and the positions of the next two remained unchanged. Bishop, who was riding well, had picked up on every round, and was now running fourth. The first four riders held their respective positions for the next four miles, until Gutzewitz’s machine developed trouble, which forced him to withdraw. Munro was the first home, arriving there minutes before Hayes, who in turn had no opposition from Clementson. A good many of the others had pulled out. SIX-MILE HANDICAP, open. G. P. Douglas, 48sec 1 R. A. Loraine, 60sec 2 S. C. Robertson (A.J.S.), 36sec ... 3 Time, smin 57sec. Twelve seconds behind Loraine in starting, Douglas had- made up the time in less than two miles, and from then on the positions remained the same as at the finish. TWELVE-MILE HANDICAP, open. A. W. Homer (Jap.), 12sec 1 R. Clementson, 24sec 2 R. R. Davey (A.J.S.), 132 sec ... 3 Time, L3min Isec. The long-start man was first hack after a two-mile run, and Loraine and Homer were second and third. Landreho completed a sixth of the course, hut through taking too wide a turn disabled his machine by running into the water. The end of the fourth mile saw Loraine, Homer, and Hayes in that order, with Davey back to fourth place. There was no change until Homer overtook Loraine on the eighth mile to increase his lead later, but Loraine had to withdraw because of an engine defect. Homer maintained his position and finished well ahead of Clementson, who was second, with Davey next.
