Y.W.C.A. SPORTS IN SYDNEY
The numbers included in the sports department of the Sydney Y.W.C.A. total BUO, as . reported by Miss Bertha Saimond, health and recreation secretary of the Dunedin Association. Cricket for women is booming, while among the summer sports are also included swimming,’ rowing, and baseball. Tennis in-'Sydney, becomes practically a winter sport, while hockey is very popular, and basketball is included among winter games. Each branch of sport has its own committee, which iu turn is represented on the Sports Council. Through this council and these committees, a groat deal is done iu fostering the personal sense ot responsibility of team captains and delegates, and raising the general standards of sportsmanship and of play throughout the teams. Mrs Peatfiokl is secretary of the sports department, while Miss Moreford, graduate of the Australian College ot physical Culture, has taken up her work as physical culture instructress. A properly-equipped gymnasium, with stall bars and apparatus, is part of the Sydney Association building, which also contains the hostel. At the time of Miss Salmond’s visit the accommodation of the latter was over-taxed, and extra beds had to be provided in club rooms and other rooms not in use during tee summer recess. Miss Saimond has returned to take up her work in Dunedin after a holiday in the Blue Mountains and a visit to Sydney, during which she was able to take a refresher course in Laugridge’s School of Physical Culture, as well as some rhythmic dancing with M iss Margaret Mornd. Something was also seen of the work in the new German dancing lately introduced into Sydney by Mrs Young, who has been to America for its study. Enrolments for classes in physical culture and for sports teams under Miss Salmond’s supervision are already being recorded at the local association.
